Should we do it?

Justin and I just returned from a lovely 10 day visit to Vancouver Island to see my family.  While we were there, we decided to take a one day workshop on “How to open a Bed and Breakfast”.  We have been toying with the idea for a while. You see, we have a two bedroom suite on the lower level of our house.  We have been renting it out to some really fabulous people over the last three years as a long-term rental but have always toyed with the idea of running a bed and breakfast, or vacation rental.

Of course, the idea of a bed and breakfast is so romantic.  You get to create this environment for people to come and relax, a cozy place for them to call home.  You get to introduce them the place that you love to call home.  You get to showcase your world.  And as a bonus, you get to meet travellers from all over.  You get to talk to new people all the time, find out about what they do, where they have been, what they have done and what drew them to the Yukon. People often have a dream about coming to the Yukon.  To experience the wild and nature untouched.  To see large animals, roaming wild and free, because that happens here.

I also absolutely love the idea of designing and decorating a place from scratch. I have been scanning design magazines and the Ikea catalogue for years pondering what our space might look like.  I have Pinned so many images of things that I would like to include in our space that we share with others…including wall hangings and crafts that we create ourselves.

When we arrived home, it was that afternoon that we were sitting on the front porch, watching our two little boys climb up into their tree fort pretending they were driving a fire truck, or a Tie-Fighter, when our current tenant stopped by to talk to us.  She announced that her and her partner bought a house and they would be moving out at the end of the next month.  Big hugs and congratulations were in order of course.  The purchase of your first house is one of those great moments to celebrate!!! Really Celebrate!!!

It also left us with “Well now what?”

It didn’t take us long to come to the conclusion of “Let’s do it.  Let’s jump right in and do this thing we have been talking about for the past few years”.

Opening day is July 1.  It is now April 26.  I think we might have a busy two months ahead of us.
